Michael,
You asked how many and far back to go. I have gone back to the first
couple who came to Acadia ca 1670's on my fathers side and in Quebec
the 1660's on my mothers side. On my father's side I am talking to tenth
and eleventh generation cousins and have been able to connect 23,337
descendants. From this I have become the resident expert as my data base
is one of the largest on the family and the history of the family. The
nice thing is that I am using the genealogy program Brothers Keeper and
within it I keep all the data sent to me. I am now up to over ninety one
thousand people listed in my data base and have been able to help other
people with other families.
You have to decide how far and how much information you want on the
family. All the best in your research
