Subject: [QUEBEC] Former Town, Gore, Argenteuil ..to.. Newport, Compton, 1870's

Hello,
I am curious about a town or former-township, named Newport, in Compton
County. My ancestors initially settled in the former-township of Gore
(also North Gore) in Argenteuil County, which is now where the town of
Lachute is (arrived ~1825). They were part of a family-group or group of
families from County Sligo, Ireland. Some of them also settled in
Lakefield, Mille Isles, and Morin Heights in Argenteuil County.
But, prior to 1880, my ancestors moved from Morin Heights .. to Newport
Township in Compton County. They were listed there in the 1881 Census.
I have two highway-maps of Quebec Province, and I don't see a town of
Newport there. Could someone tell me where it was located?
Some of their relatives lived in Island Brook, Compton County.
Also, some of these families decided to leave Compton County and migrate to
Boston, MA, would they have come by train .. down through NH/USA? Or,
would they have traveled back to Montreal or Quebec and traveled on a ship
to Boston, MA?
Surnames I'm interested in are KERR and HENDERSON, who possibly came from
the Town of Sligo, Ireland, and seem to have been Protestants (Methodists).
One sister arrived single, and married a Levi MILLER who went to Argenteuil
Province from Laconia, NH/USA.
Someone on the IRL-Sligo List has provided me with a list of ships which
left Port Sligo between 1822 and 1849. One ship which my ancestors might
have traveled on was the "Brig, JANE," sailing into Quebec in 1825.
(Someone else told me that another ship which traveled from Sligo to Quebec
in the 1840's was the "Alan Kerr.")
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S. One of my genealogy tools is to keep "highway maps" on my desk for
the states or countries I am researching. I'm pretty sure I got my maps
of Quebec Province from ... eBay.
