Jean, Please understand that all Melungeons are not like the list folks..
Twanda's list is known for in fighting.. They are not all that way.. And
that looks bad on the Melungeons as a whole. MHA (Melungeon Heritage Assoc.)
do not do business that way.. Dr Kennedy is a good Man and you need to check
out his book "the Melungeons the resurrection of a Proud People.. The Ethnic
Cleansing of America". Please let the list know this info for some reason I
can't post. I am Co-Mgr. for the , also there
is another list ran by Kelly Pritchard,
which I co host with Karlton Douglas and
probably more I am not sure of.. I can get any info the list wants.. Am a
close friend of Dr Kennedy and Nancy ?Sparks Morrsion...Thanks Marie

Sue & Pat,

I have sat on the side lines long enough. Everyone wants proof, sometimes
that can't be done. These people who are Melungeon were put down and not
well thought of. Now they are a proud people as they should be. What is
thought to of happened was they couldn't use their real native names so they
would take names, mostly English names due to the fact that the English were
so well thought of. To me that seems to fit right in with Thomas Quick.
You can place him in different records, but the most important record you
can't find, and probably never will. To this day my mother remembers her
grandmother telling her that the kin folk were Portuguese. I could go on
with more, but no use. One thing I can say, should you go onto the
Melungeon list site and see how they argue and are so strong willed, sure
looks like a few Quicks I know.

Patsy, It does not matter to me whether he was an English Theif, or and
Englishman. He may have not been a theif he may have been a vagurant or
orphan the English tend to dispose of them as they did theif to colonize the
new world. Can you prove he was melungeon. I have that same descent in my
Kennedy line but the beginnings of the Kennedys are in Ireland. What orgin
do you think he began out as. he may have never purchased anything nor
finished his indenture but he would not have been the first one not to do
that. We know our Quick traits and personalities. so can only go on what
little history that we have and it is a fact that his line may have married
into the Melungeons, Indians, Moorish, and that is why some say they are
portage, Black Dutch, even today But It is still a beginning I wont to know
about I am list the chronicle I have on Thomas for you and the list /
Chronicle of Thomas Quick:

1718, July in Assize Court Devon , England; Sentenced to Virginia
1719, March transported from Bridford by ship Sophia, under Capt. John Law
and registered to the Queen Anne Co., Maryland
1722, Witnessed Criminal action court records of NC vs. Katter/Catter
1729, November Witness deed for Thomas Brigman Land located at Fork of
Casey Swamp and Whatton Swamp adjacent Poplar Branch
1742 November took oath of Allegiance in Bertie Co., NC noted in the book
History of old Cheraw. Thomas proved his right along with The
Catter family who is all white people. They don't list the color of
Thomas family.
1757 NC Early Tax List, Bertie Co., NC's 1a2478291
1759 Halifax was formed from Bertie ca 1759 Now could his land be Close to
the Halifax line and they did business in both counties
1760 Civil Court none payment of Physician bill
1762-1762 Brigman arrived in Anson County, place Hitchcock/Mark Creek
1762-1762 Skippers arrived in Anson County, place Mark Creek and Solomom
CreeK
1765, March 28 Thomas named in will of William Foreman as living on
75 acres of his land.
1778, May 29, Capt. James Hicks wrote of Thomas in his diary that The
Ordinal Certificate. It was found among the papers of
Thomas Quick in printed form which appears to have been gven to all that
took the Oath.
1781-1782 September 8, Excerpt from History of Cheraw he finds best friend
Captain Pegues wounded and about to go down he along with
Nero his body servant bore him from the fields and him Thomas
beg him to let him go back into battle for one more shot at the
enemy
1786 Revolutionary War Battle of Eutaw with Capt. Claudius Pegues.
Now could this be his son Thomas Jr. or himself for he states in the History
of old Cheraw; he has a son of the same name in Marlboro Co., SC. If
Thomas, were indeed born in 1699 he would have been 80 plus years old was
this to old to defend his land and family against the Tories. Or did he have
a son named Thomas and the Thomas of Marlboro was a Grandson of Thomas the
Whig. Probably will never be proven but an interesting theory.
We heard of Thomas the Whig no more. He has died between 1786 and 1790 the
first US Census to be taken.
Patsy, as you say nothing is written in Stone but here are the fact I have
dug up and some that others have dug up
We may never now. whether their were two or three Thomas. the Thomas of
Marlboro is differently belong to Thomas of Anson Co. but is Thomas of Anson
the Son of the Immigant. Do you know if the men of Marlboro are the sons of
the Immigrant of the sons of Thomas of Anson co. I rally would like to have
proof of this
Sue

> I think trying to place Thomas Quick as a English Man is wasting your
time. If you will take just the facts. Thomas Quick can be found in Bertie
County.. Starting with witnessing sale of property about 1724, There is no
question that he was there. No question that he was a wheeler and dealer.
He is found several time making purchases from estates, but NO LAND records
can be found for him until after 1876 in Marlboro Cty, S.C. according to
the JAW Letter at this time the Quicks were given equal rights because of
their contribution to the Rev. War. One of these rights was too own
property, previously they could not own property because of their race.
Now if Thomas Quick had have been English, he would have been allowed to own
property and it does not appear that there was a lack of money seeing how
much was owed to them from Rev. War.
> Not every thing in genealogy is written in stone. I am taking the Thomas
letter for the basis of my belief as to the ancestry. I had rather have a
Melungeon for an ancestor than an English Thief.
