I hope you have had replies by now, but if not, here's some info: Birney Quick and his partner Byron Bradley started the Grand Marais Art Colony in about 1950. You can check their website for a little more information.

Birney and his wife, Marian, had three children: Mary Faulkner, Dan Quick and Leslie Pederson. Leslie and her husband own the East Bay Hotel in Grand Marais.
