\b Individual biographical text for John Rader{\xe {\v Rader\:John (CA 1769-1840)
}} #380\b0\par\par The record of the marriage of John and Etter,Mary is recorded in the "Annals of
Southwest Virginia 1769-1800" by Lewis Preston Summers, part two of volumn one. On May 24, 1800 John
was living in Wythe County, Virginia and had one male in his household over 16 years of age and own
ed one horse and no slaves. In 1800 John was listed as a subscriber for the building of the St. John
's Lutheran Church in Wytheville, Virginia(See "Wythe Conuty Chapters" edited and published by James
S. Presgraves). In 1800 John and Mary sold land to John W. Doak located in Evansham, Virginia(Wythe
county Deed Book No. 2, page 496 dated 1800). Evansham was the original name for Wytheville, Virgin
ia. On September 22, 1801 John purchased 200 acres of land in Greene County, Tennessee and listed hi
s home as Wythe County, Virginia. The Greene County tax list of 1812 indicated he owned 200 acres of
land. Mary was probably the daughter of .i.Etter:;Daniel Etter and a sister to Catherine Etter Rade
r above. \par\par\pard\plain\fs24\f5\fs20 The following is a brief history of the lives of John and
Mary Rader who left their home in Wytheville, Virginia around 1800 and made their way to the valley
of East Tennessee to raise their family and settle a new territory. John Rader and Mary Etter were m
arried in Wythe County, Virginia on December 17, 1793. See the "Annals of Southwest Virginia" by Sum
mers, page 1377. John Rader moved from Wythe County, Virginia to Greene County, Tennessee prior to 1
801 according to a land deed for the purchase of 200 acres from Thomas Province located in Greene Co
unty(Greene County Deed Book volumn 24, page 186 dated September 22, 1801). This same 200 acres was
later sold to John Lady in 1819(Deed Book volumn 1, page 37 dated February 23, 1819). From 1809 to 1
811 John was living in Captain Joseph Kirk's district on the waters of Lick Creek and owned 200 acre
s of land. By 1812 he had purchased 160 additional acres in Bulls Gap, Tennessee lying in Greene, Ha
wkins and Jefferson Counties. By 1829 he had sold the 200 acres and had only the 160 acres at Bulls
Gap. In 1840 John was living in district number six and owned three separate pieces of land, one con
taining 50 acres, another 44 acres and one containing 31 acres. On July 29, 1807 John Rader was appo
inted by the Greene County, Tennessee Court of Common Pleas to rear Daniel Etter, son of John and Ma
ry Etter, and to teach him the trade of wagon maker(Page 237). On March 12, 1822 John signed a deed
of trust to Merryman Payne for the 160 acres he owned lying in Greene, Hawkins and Jefferson Countie
s to secure a loan of ninety dollars and seventy cents from Deaderick and Sevier of Greeneville, Ten
nessee. Again on November 6, 1835 John mortaged his property consisting of 50 acres located in Bulls
Gap, Tennessee and 31 acres located on War Creek on the waters of Lick Creek. This property was use
d to secure a loan of $287.63 from Lewis Woolford of Wythe County, Virginia with John Etter acting a
s trustee for the benefit of Lewis Woolford(Greene County Deed Book volumn 18, page 63 dated Novembe
r 6, 1835). Both John Rader and Lewis Woolford died before this last debt was repaid and the executo
rs of the estate of Lewis Woolford sued the estate of John Rader to recover the $287.63(Greene Count
y, Tennessee Chancery Court volumn May 1825 to March 1836, page 481 dated 1842). John probably morta
ged his property in 1835 to defray expenses in a lawsuit filed against him and James Guthrie on Nove
mber 9, 1835 in Greene County, Tennessee Chancery Court(Chancery Court record dated November 9, 1835
, page 279). The case involved the rightful ownership of 90 acres of land John possessed lying in Gr
eene, Hawkins and Jefferson Counties. The case was heard on February 16, 1837 and resulted in John l
oosing ownership of the property, some of the same property he had mortgaged in 1835. A final dispos
ition of the case was filed in the Greene County, Tennessee Deed Book numner 22, page 412 dated Marc
h 24, 1847. Also a complete history of the case was filed in Chancery Court dated February 17 1837,
page 306 with a final disposition filed in Chancery Court dated September 14, 1837, volumn May 1825
to March 1836, page 315. John Rader died intestate in Greene County, Tennessee in August of 1840. Le
land Davis was appointed by county court to act as administrator of his estate. The court also appoi
nted William Willoughby, Thomas Jackson and Vincent Jackson as commissioners to set aside a portion
of the estate left by John Rader to be used by his widow Mary Rader(Greene County, Tennessee County
Court volumn January 1839 to December 1843,pages 159 and 167, dated September 7, 1840 and October 5,
1840 respectively) The personal estate of John Rader was sold at public auction on October 2 and 3
of 1840. The sale of individual items and those who purchased them is recorded in the Greene County,
Tennessee Inventory of Estates, volumn 1828 to 1854, page 574, dated October 5, 1841. Some of the i
tems purchased were: scythe and cradle - $2.00, broad axe - $2.12, hammer and anvil - $.65, one loom
- $2.50, candlestand - $1.91, harrow - $2.51, plow - $3.07, pair of spectacles - $.50, razor and bo
x - $1.01, umbrella - $1.26, windmill - $14.06, big kettle - $3.20, fur hat - $2.12, bed - $5.00, ho
rse - $35.00, cow - $9.56 and books - $.79. His personal estate was sold for a total of $373.13. The
settlement of John Rader's estate was a legal nightmare and was finally sorted out in Chancery Cour
t in Greeneville, Tennessee on February 14, 1844. The final decree for this case can be found in Cha
ncery Court record volumn June 1841 to June 1848, pages 455 through 457, dated June 1844. This final
decree is valuable since it lists all the children of John and Mary Rader, the husbands of all his
daughters and the location of each of his children. As a result of the decree, the remainder of John
's land was sold at public auction on June 10, 1844 at the Greeneville Courthouse to William Drake a
nd Anthony B. Keele for $67.75. Mary Rader, the wife of John Rader, died in 1848 and left a Will dat
ed April 2, 1847. This Will was probated in Greene County, Tennessee on March 6, 1848 which is used
as her death date since the exact date is not known. Mary gave most of her personal estate to her da
ughters; Sarah and Sophia were not mentioned. The remainder of her estate was sold at public auction
on April 3, 1848 and is recorded in the Greene County, Tennessee Inventory of Estates, volumn June
1843 to March 1854, page 320. After John died Mary lived the remainder of her life with her oldest d
