Subject: Irish and UK marriage data
Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 21:18:38 +0100
Dear all,
I have abstracted the marriage data from the LDS set of UK Vital Records.
It is a text file at
http://www.parkesfamily.btinternet.co.uk/marriagesLDS.txt
As with the births data, the data is "selected" and certainly incomplete.
There is a mix of civil registrations and data transcribed from church
records. Please save a copy on your computer if you wish. The web space
will be re-worked soon and these files will no longer be available.
Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in Ireland in 1845.
Civil registration of all marriages was required after 1864.
Catholics, before 1864, could choose if they wished to register their church
marriage - many chose not to do so.
The data on the civil registration consists of that in the file above along
with the residence of the couple and their ages at the time of marriage,
their occupations and those of their fathers, the names of the fathers and
of two witnesses and details of the location of the marriage ceremony and
the person who performed the ceremony. The ages given are frequently "over
21", "full" or "minor". Exact ages are rare.
Hope it helps.
Regards - Norman
