Hi,
Looks like you have a tough job there, especially as I see from your email
address that you're in Oz., but a few points:

1. If he worked for a railway company in Manchester & you could identify
which one, there may be records at Kew. See a recent posting for guidance on
the sort of info that may be available:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/RAILWAY-UK/2007-07/1185532275
However, being an Engine Driver at such a young age would probably be
unlikely on an English railway.

2. The National Archives has a research guide on Colonial records:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=74
but implies that many are located in the country concerned.

3. Given the recent sad history of Sierra Leone, contacting the Archives
there may be difficult. Checkout the Wikipedia entry [but use caution
accessing websites in West Africa - malware etc may be present]:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Leone_Public_Archives
& this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Leone_Government_Railway

Good luck!
Pete Davidson
