Hi Magdalen,
I would say it is extremely likely that Elijah was employed on railway
contracts and never actually worked for one of the Railway Companies as such.
Railways were under construction on the dates and in the areas you have listed.
Lines were being completed in Buxton 1863, Crumlin 1871, Portishead 1867 and
a tramway was under construction Barrow-in-Furness in 1899. Incidentally
the Barrow tramway, if that is where he was finally employed, was in deep
financial trouble at the time and went into liquidation in 1898. If so could this
have possibly had some bearing on his health?
It was pretty rare for railway employees of mainland railway companies to
flit from one company to another as promotion was very much tied to length of
service.
