Thank you for your email.
Elijah Watts actually died as the result of an accident in Millom where he
was employed a the time. He had a contract for loading vessels with pig
iron at the Millom Iron Works Pier. He was supervising this work and
standing underneath a chute which gave way.
His injuries included a broken thigh, dislocated shoulder, crushed right
arm and head inuries.
His arm was amputated at North Lonsdale Hospital in Barrow but he died the
following day.
The 1881 census shows that he was a contractor employing 200 men! He is
buried at St Michael's Church yard, Rampside.
