Does anyone have any further information or family connections for J.S.H. Rainey of Camden, Ouachita Co., AR?
Here's what I have on him thus far:
Listed among early professionals for Camden, Ouachita Co., AR is Rainey, J. A. & Daly. Goodspeed's History of Ouachita Co., AR lists in Camden "J. S. H. Rainey and R. M. Hardy are two attorneys;" and "Among the lawyers of the past, who should be mentioned are: E. A. Warren, M. C.; Hen. John T. Bearden; Judge Strain; Case and Hughes; Judge C. C. Scott, afterward of the Supreme Court; Judge A. A. Stith, a talented man; G. A. Gallagher, one of the first lawyers in the State; Capt. Downman, who was in the Cuban fillibustering expedition; William Haskill; Judge J. T. Elliott. M. C.; Rainey and Daly;...."
Listed among the patentees in the book "Arkansas Swamp Land Sales, 1855 - 1868" compiled by Desmond Walls Allen, ISBN 1-56546-209-2, published by Arkansas Research, Inc., PO Box 303, Conway, AR 72033 are:
Raines, Nancy S.
Rainey, John S.H.
Rainey, John S.H. assignee of Pickle Hood
Rainey, Peter
Rainey, Robert B.
Rainy, Samuel's heirs
Raney, Morgan
Raney, P. H. [Pickle Hood mentioned above??]
Raney, Radford E.
Raney, Robt. B.
John S.H. Rainey married Maria Louisa Foulkes 16 Sept 1858 at Hempstead, AR.
There is a J S H Rainey in Camden, Ouachita Co., AR in the 1860 census, series M653, roll 47, pg 156:
#1068/1141
Rainey, J S H, 41, m, Lawyer, 2500/60000, NC
Maria L, 21, f, VA
Mary E, 1, f, AR
Hannah, Miss M J, 16, f, AR
Only his wife and daughter are listed in the 1870 census, same area. Judging from her financial listing in the census, I'd guess that she was widowed:
The 1870 Census for Camden, Ouachita Co., AR; series M593, roll 59, page 269:
#278/278 (appears to be a rooming house)
Rainey, L M, 30, f, w, 1500/500, VA
E M, 11, f, w, AR
I rather believe that John may well be a brother to my hubby's ancestor, Young E. Rainey, son of James & Elizabeth (Barbee) Rainey, based on the early census records for James. He had at least 6 sons and 3 daughters. Only two of the 6 sons--William F. T. and Young E.--have been officially accounted for and only 2 of the 3 daughters.
John S. H. Rainey was born in NC according to census records as was Young & William F.T. Both of the latter men were ennumerated in AR in various census records. Wm. F.T. in 1850 Perry, Johnson Co., AR and Young E. in Camden, Ouachita Co., AR in 1860 & 1870 in ADDITION to being ennumerated in back at his home in Carroll Co., TN. His youngest son James Howell Rainey was also ennumerated both in AR & TN in 1870. He ultimately moved to Camden, Ouachita Co., AR full time by 1872.
I've always wondered what the "draw" was for the TN Raineys to be moving back and forth between their TN homes and AR. Having a close relative there certainly could do it.
Anyway, sorry for the length of this post! Will be more than happy to exchange information with anyone interested.
Best,
SueB
