I have been trying to piece together the puzzle of my great-great grandmother's life. Her name was Sallie Emma Berry (called Emma) and she was born on 24 August 1866 in Moorefield, Hardy Co., Virginia (now W. Virginia).

Her parents were James W. Berry (b. abt 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia) and Mary Virginia Houseworth (b. 15 Apr 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia; d. 7 May 1877; Martinsberg, Berkeley Co., W. Virginia).

They were married around 1861 and had 5 children:

Isaac D. (b. 1862)
William Ramer (b. 1864)
Sallie Emma (1866-1944)
John A (1868-1936)
Ward (b. 1874)

In the 1870 Census, Emma Berry is listed with her family and was living in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virgina. However, in the 1880 Census, Emma Berry is listed as living with her aunt and uncle - John and Mary Houseworth. John Houseworth was the brother of Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry, Emma's mother. In this Census, Emma Berry is listed as a daughter of the house.

What I'm trying to find out is what happened to her parents and siblings. I'm thinking that it was a serious illness that wiped out most of the family, but not serious enough to make the papers, as I can't find anything there. Scarlet fever? Measles?

Through cemetary records, I can confirm that Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry died on 7 May 1877. Of their children, I can only trace two of them.

John A. Berry married Emma M. Rofinot (b. 1874) around 1895 and they had one son, Eugene (b. 1896). John Berry died 25 June 1936 in Chicago.

Sallie Emma Berry married Luther Scott Tiffany on 9 July 1889 in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virginia. They immediately departed for Chicago, IL and lived there until their deaths.

James W. Berry (b. 1834) simply vanished. I can find no records of him anywhere. If Sallie Emma was 'adopted' by the Houseworth family, I'm wondering if James W. left to find work, as he would not be able to care for his family himself, given the times. The three remaining children have disappeared also.

Her grandparents were Isaac Houseworth (1807-1886) and Sarah Ramer (1806-1884). Great-grandparents were Frederick Randolph Ramer (1779-1862) and Elizabeth C. Smith (1777-1852).

Emma Berry and Luther Scott Tiffany had 4 children, one of them a son called Ramer Tiffany (1896-1967). My line comes down from their daughter, Ruth ((1894-1968).

I'm very interested in solving the puzzle of this branch of my family. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Sarah Tiffany
