Seeking information about Elizabeth Harris of Clay County. She was
(presumably) the second wife of Toliver F. Shumate (Taliaferro F. Shoemate,
Shewmate, etc.). She would have been born about 1810, married about 1839;
marriage ended before 19 December 1844, when Toliver married Marilla "Rilla"
Bell in Marshall County. Elizabeth was probably the sister of Dr. Daniel
Harris of Clay County.
Toliver's first wife was Elizabeth Brantley; he married her on 16
May 1833 in Perry County. I have no information as to how, when, or where
this marriage ended. Apparently there were no children from this marriage.
I have no information as to when or where Toliver married Miss
Harris, or exactly when they were married. There were three children of
this marriage; the last one, James Berriman Shumate, was born in Wedowee,
Alabama, in 1843. The story is that Elizabeth was visiting her Harris
relations when James was born. She may have died in childbirth or shortly
thereafter.
Any information on this family will be appreciated. Thank you for
your help. Jo Anna Dale, 704 Ponca Drive, Independence MO 64056-2053, (816)
