Dear David,
There are actually two John POWELL's on the census in 1870.
One in Etowah-Attalla ed352 is John age 26, wife Lucinda age 23, and son
Elias - 1.
In Etowah-Bennettsville-ed242 is the other John age 28, wife Sanda age 26,
and Franklin age 6/12.
In 1880 etowah ed 60 p256 there are 21 -30 POWELL'S found in a row. I
believe that they include M.J.'s father or fath-in-law William with John
being a broth or bro-in-law. While I don,t have access to any but a few
copies of pages from the census at this time, I can add that all of the
Powell heads of household in this group are b in Al
and the only parent of these not b in Al is William's listed as being b SC.
Sinda's moth. is b NC. I do not show the second John in 1880 as I was
concentrating only on those Powell's living near M.J. at the time.
Since the spouses' names' are both so similar I cannot isolate your John
based on the facts that you gave me. Perhaps the extra info will help you
decide which one is your true ancestor. I really think that it's to our
advantage to keep posting within the newsgroup because the exposure may bring
help and possibilities of finding further connections to this line.
Keep in touch,
Beverly Powell

The John Powell that you list from the 1880 Census Etowah County Al, is he
the one that has a wife listed as Sinda or Cindy? If it is that is my 4th
great grandmother Sinda Rilla Lawson. If it is who is this John Powell?
Where did he come from? Who are his parents? Who is the child Frank? I hope
you can help me figure this out.

Thanks
