CHARLES J REED
Born: ca 1861 England (listed in 1900 census in
Baker, Crawford, Kansas and most of his children were born in Crawford County,
Kansas
Died: no info known

Don't let a middle initial mess you up! LOL

1900 Census Crawford Co., Ks lists
REED, Charles H 39 b. England ----Baker Twp

He was listed above
REED, Charles J 50 b. IL----Washington Twp.

Charles H. b. Mar 1861 married wife Josephine 15 years ago, as per
census----so...c. 1885
Josephine b. Feb. 1870 gave birth to 7 children, 6 of whom are living, so
all offspring b. bef 1900 are present and accounted for
Anna May 1887 13
Bessie E. Jan 1889 11
Charles E. July 1890 9
Fayettia Oct 1892 7
Jennie M. Aug 1896 3
George D. Aug 1899 2/12

Charles Emigrated in 1876 and was a coal miner--as per census. He was born
in England as were both of his parents
Josephine was born in Indiana, as were both of her parents
Their first child, Anna, was born in Indiana, whereas the rest were born in
Kansas--therefore they were probably married in Indiana 1885 -1887 and were in
Kansas before 1889.

Floyd Son 18 "

Sherwood Son 7 or 8 (written over)

FLOTOW is a strange name. The only FLOTOWs listed in Indiana in 1880 are all
in MIchigan City, LaPorte Co., Indiana. Bet that's where Charles and
Josephine were married and I bet her maiden name was FLOTOW. All were born in
Indiana or Germany. Since the census states that JOsephine's parents were both born
in Indiana, that narrows them down.

There is a Fred FLOTOW 29 (b. c.1851) with wife Carrie 28 and children Otto
3 and Frank 9/12. He and his wife were born in Mechlinburg, Germany
Josephine (?) was born 1870 so in 1880 she was 10. Fred is the right age to
be an uncle (or father by a first marriage, in which case the children often
went to the maternal grandparents)

There is a John FLOTOW 39 (b c 1841) with wife Sophia 22 (b. c. 1858),
children Lena 8 and Fred 6. All except Fred were born in Mechlinburg. Could Lena
be a nickname for Josephine? Josephine was born in 1870. Sophia would probably
not have had a child at age 12, but again, there may have been a first wife.

In 1870 FLOTOWs only 4 appear in the census anywhere in the US and those are
in NY or WI and all were born in Prussia.

In 1880 there are 18 FLOTOWs and all are WI, IL or IN

The mid 1800s saw many emigrants from Germany and many dropped their middle
name or altered their name to escape being drafted into the military. Also
many were recruited to work in the mines. I think your Josephine may have been a
FLOTOW and said she was born in Indiana to avoid hassle.
