More from the book "Rev. Hezekiah Balch, D.D. 1741 - 1810: A Biography" by
Leah M. Brown (1988) on page 9:
Referring to the children of Hezekiah and Hannah Balch, "There were six
children -- four sons and two daughters -- Hezekiah Washington, Samuel
Young, John Tennant, Elijah Whitfield, Elizabeth who married Rev. Robert
Henderson, and Dorcas who married Robert Wyley/Wyly." [The footnote in
Brown's book refers to Galusha B. Balch, M.D., Genealogy of the Balch
Families in America, 1897]
"Two years after Elizabeth's death Dorcas, their other daughter who was
still at home, was married on the 5th day of September 1797 to Robert Wyly,
a merchant of Greeneville. [Goldene Fillers Burgner, compiler, Greene
County, Tennessee Marriages, 1783 - 1868]"
Now let's go again to the end of page 226 and the beginning of page 227 of
the 1830 census; here's the link ...
www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/8214/221_236.html
The end of page 226
Wyly, Dorcas
and the beginning of page 227:
Wyly, J.W.
Rhea, John
Rhea, Robert
Balch, Ann
...
...
So we have Hezekiah's daughter (Dorcas), his grand-son, and his widow living
on both sides of John Rhea and Robert Rhea.
We know from previous posts (1) that the Ann Balch in this 1830 enumeration
was Ann Luckey Balch, the elder Hezekiah's second wife; that Ann Luckey
Balch's foster son, Seth J. W. Luckey was married in 1831 to Sarah Rhea, the
daughter of Joseph Rhea and Frances Breden; (3) the Greeneville John Rhea in
this census was married to John Tennant Balch's step-daughter, Mary "Polly"
Dennis.
Why am I posting these things? Well, the John Rhea living there between
J.W. Wyly and Robert Rhea is my 3rd great grandfather, but beyond that ....
so far, it's a mystery.
Best regards,
James Rhea McCoy
