Hi Debi
Thanks you very much for your kind response. Very interesting bunch of
tidbits you sent.
During my research I have come across a General John SPURR and a Major John
SPURR, cousins, who are often confused for/with one another. Some of the
info you sent confirms this confusion. My mission, if I decide to accept it
<g>, is to straighten out these 2 men.
The General is a 1st cousin 6 x removed and the Major is a 2nd cousin 6 x
removed to me. The General was 1759-1816 and the Major was 1749-1822. The
General was born in Stoughton, Mass and died in Charlton, Mass. The Major
was born in Dorchester, Mass and died in Providence, Rhode Island. It is
interesting to note that in the RI Vital Records (NEGHS) that you sent that
the "Major" is now a "Colonel." First time I have seen him referred in this
rank. Maybe to add a little more to the confusion. <g>
Would you, by chance, for my records, be able to scan the title pages of
(1) the book where you got the info on Gen John Spurr (page 108)(I believe
a Davis reference)
(2) the book where you got the info on Maj John Spurr (page 188)(Mass Field
Officers)
As can be seen by theses 2 references, each indicates that John was at the
Boston Tea Party, but each was a different man. So you can see my dilemma.
Also, I was wondering if the Major John might happen to be in the Davis
reference also. Major John married Sally WEST in 1777 in Newport, Rhode
Island. General John married Sally DAVIS in 1798 in Charlton. The General
was married previously to Mercy DUNBAR in 1783 in Stoughton.
The above requests would be a big help in my trying to sort out these 2 men.
And Debi, anything else you can find in NEHG Registers would be real
helpful.
I will contact the Swan Point Cemetery for a burial plot number.
Thanks so much
Richard Hardwick
