Bob,

I don't want to take up too much space here for DNA stuff, but have
also set up a RICHMOND-DNA list here at RootsWeb, if anyone would
like to expand on the DNA discussion. I would invite anyone that is
interested to subscribe to that list also.

Actually, I became interested in this DNA tool a few months ago. I
searched the web and learned what I could. (I still have a lot to
learn) There are quite a few of these surname projects out
there. The only place I found that had anything started for the
RICHMOND name was at "World Families Network". What they they do: If
there is only a couple of participants for a surname, they set up a
basic web page so that participants can share results. They do this
for the lab when there is yet no family member to run a project. I
adopted the project and started the website about two months ago.

On June 1st, the website was ready. Anyone that would like to find
out how all this works can check the website for more information:

www.richmonddna.net

It is really quite easy to get started. Everything a participant
needs to know is available from the site. There are links to other
Frequently Asked Questions there also.

A likely scenario would be that different branches of the Richmond
DNA would emerge. You Bob, and your cousins would probably form the
basis of a group and any closely related Richmond's that joined later
would show in the results. As the project moves along, the groups
are divided up into common ancestor's, such as: John1, John2,
etc. They could even be grouped according to those in the RICHMOND book.

An interesting side to our project is starting to emerge. I have
been in contact with a couple of gentlemen surnamed WEBB. They have
recently identified their DNA as matching DNA of a RICHMOND they
found in a DNA surname database. Apparently one of the groups they
have in their WEBB DNA Project is called "Richmond alias Webb". It
is founded on the fact that,

"a Richmond alias Webb family from Wiltshire in England. William De
Richmond marrying Alice Webb but taking the Webb name in 1500's."

The plan is to have an area of the site devoted to this branch.

There is plenty more to learn and I find this new tool for
genealogists fascinating. It is not, however, a substitute for good
detective work. It may help give an idea where to focus your efforts though.

Thanks for listening,
Jeff Richmond
