Donna,

I have found a link between the Stedmans and the Jaquays family! But I
need your help to flsh it out.

Daniel Stedman and Martha Braham had a daughter Meribah, b. 12 July 1789 in
SK (Daniel Stedman's Journal). Meribah married a William Jaquays b.
1775-1780. They married before 1810 and had several children of which I
have identified four: Jonathan, b. 1811, Elizabeth, b. 1812, Meribah S., b.
1817, and William, b. 1820. William, Sr., died between 1840 and 1850,
based on census, and Meribah died in Feb 1850.

I had been recording William's name as Jenckes as that was how one source
referred to it. However, in reviewing some note, mostly from Daniel
Stedman's Journal, I discovered that it was William Jaquays. I located him
in the 1820-1840 census and three of his children in the 1850 census.

The following is some of the evidence that I used, along with the Beaman
books and Arnold. I also used the RI Cemetery Database index.

Daniel McCoon Stedman, Jr., died in 1806, and his will named her Meribah
Stedman. However, in 1813, Daniel's father Daniel McCoon Stedman, Sr.,
died and his land was divided among the children of his deceased son Daniel
(as he was the only son).

1814 So.Kingstown, RI records, Bk 3, p. 33

Daniel Steadman of So. Kingstown divided land with: (This is Dan'l, Sr.)
Daniel Stedman (This is his grandson)
Susannah Taylor
Thomas H. Stedman
William Stedman
Meribah Jaquays
Martha Stedman
John B. Stedman
Oliver Stedman

From Daniel Stedman's journal - (Journal is by grandson)

"1809, I hired a House to live in of Nicholas Gould, being the Allen House,
and lived there two years, and 1811 I lived in Foster Shelden's house, and
1812 I move here where I have lived ever since. My Grandfather was then
living, and My Mother lived in the house with him, and I improved his
place, or farm, took it to halves ever after. I kept house untill he died
which was January 7th, 1813, aged 84 years and about 3 months, and in 1814
we divided the place among my Fathers Children being his by his Father by
Deed, and it was divided into 8 lots and I drew the House Lot, and have
lived there ever since. And I Bought all my Brother Thomas' Right, and my
Brother Williams right which fell to us all after his death. I sold 8
acres of it to Joseph C. Gardiner, adjoining him, and kept the west side
for myself, and I bought about 3 acres of William Jaquays and his wife and
sold the same to Willard Hazard with a reserve of 54 Rods in the south west
Corner for a Burying ground. I was to fence the same, and William Jaquays
requested a right for his Family to be buried there which they have had
granted so far, and they still view it as their priveledge."

"In 1819 I was Chosen Justice of the Peace and held 13 commissions ending
1836 under Five Goveners - Night, Fenner, Gibbs, Arnold, and Francis, and
ingaged by six Justices two senetors and one notary Republick - Gavit,

while I was Justice I maried Twenty one Couple.

Below is my analysis of the 1820-1840 census data. Of course, there is
uncertainty... It does tell me that there are a few more children that we
should be finding. I am most concerned with daughters for whom I do not
know whom they married.

Female 10-15 : Daughter Jaquays, b. 1825-1830

1850 - No obvious record in 1850 census. Meribah died in Feb 1850 so would
not be listed. William had also probably died.

Jonathan did not marry. Died 1891.
Elizabeth married a Mister Harvey but I have not been able to ID him
yet. She died 1879.
Meribah S. married Reuben Wright and died in 1896.
William married Sarah Harvey and died in 1904.

I had seen records that gave me that her husband was a William Jenckes;
however, I suspect that was a misspelling:

Do you (or anyone) have any records for a William Jaquays or any others
that may be part of this family from this time period??

john.
