Hi.

As a newcomer to the list, I'll give a brief recitation of my RILEYs.
Actually, these are my wife's Rileys; I'm Polish/German. :-)

According to the tombstone inscriptions for two of the children listed in
the first family, James and John, they were born in County Westmeath,
Ireland.

The spelling of the surname RILEY has been standardized; the usual
variations RIELY, REILLY, etc. have all been encountered.

1.7 Patrick, b. 1824 Ireland.

According to a biography of James RILEY that I found, the family emigrated
from Ireland c. 1836, settling first in New York City. In 1844, they
travelled up the Hudson River to Albany, thence via the Erie Canal to Lake
Ontario where they took passage on a ship. Arriving in northern Wisconsin,
they came by wagon to Kenosha.

BTW, it may be obvious that my wife's line descends through Catherine
RAFFERTY, daughter of Catherine RILEY and Patrick RAFFERTY, because I've
got Tom O'Grady's birthplace nailed down.

Just one of my goals, apart from expanding my research on the RILEYs, is to
locate current members of the family still living in Ireland. My wife and I
have found O'Gradys descended from a common ancestor and the correspondence
is wonderful.

Happy to be aboard,

Tom
