New lister residing in Western Australia trying to follow up a "family story".

Eleanora Rosina JONES (nee SHEPHARD) married Joseph JONES in 1886. There were two children of this marriage - Eleanor Maud born April 1887 and Frederick Henry born 1898. Husband Joseph died on 1 May 1900 and according to family story the widowed Eleanor went to Providence, Rhode Island searching for a friend. Being unsuccessful, she returned to the U.K.

The two children were both married in England - Eleanor Maud in July 1919 and Frederick Henry in 1924. I am guessing therefore that the family would have been in the States sometime between May 1900 and July 1919. I have searched the Ellis Island records without success (except for one passenger in 1911 who was an U.S. citizen). Is there a relevant census for Providence I can search? Are there other shipping lists other than Ellis Island ? Can anyone provide a clue please ?
