Jim,

What do you consider the ~early times~? Do those books go back to the
marriages as early as the late 1700s? I'm looking for a marriage or marriages for
Rhodes Stevens/Stephens/STRIVENS to Abigail Kimball there in Providence (they
lived in Johnston from what I can tell on the census). So, the marriage would
either be under Strivens or Stevens for the groom.

In 1790 census the name was STRIVENS, but Rhodes apparently changed to
STEVENS by 1800 when he was in Tolland, CT.

Another question: Do these books give any further information, such as who
witnessed the marriage or parents of the couple, or age of the bride and groom,
or is it just basic couple and date?
