Hi Roberts list members,
I recieved the following information from a VERY helpful lady and
thought I'd pass it on as it may link some other Roberts. There are
census records in here as well. If you find a link to your ancestors
please let me know so I can add your information to mine as well. There
is some very interesting information here!
Thanks!
John

Greene, in 1854. He commenced practice here in 1870, at his father's

Gold Mining Days in the West
Gold was discovered in Calif on Jan 24 1848 and by 1849 the rush to the
gold
fields was in full swing. . . .Many Chenango County men were among the
adventurers.
. . .When the gold fever was at its height in 1851, Simeon Davis, who
owned
and operated the Yellow Tavern at Lower Genegantslet, had a son who
wanted to
visit the new Eldorado and Simeon obtained the money necessary for him
to go.
Then the son backed out, so "Uncle Same" went in his place with a party
of
vice who left Greene that winter. He was about 60 years of age and
George C.
ROBERTS was sixteen, the youngest of the group, and the one to whom we
are
indebted for the following anecdotes. Mr. Davis stood the voyage well
until
going up to the Pacific in a ship touched at Acapulco, Mexico, where he
ate a
hearty dinner of beans that were not thoroughly cooked. This caused an
illness from which Mr. David did not recover. After lingering along a
number
of days, he died at Stockton, Calif. Dr. George W. ROBERTS and Joseph
D.
VanValkenburgh were two moremembers of this party, and the latter is
said to
have run a saw mill and worked a gold mine there from 1851 to 1856.
The Civil War
George C. ROBERTS was in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, serving one
year
on the U.S.S. Maumee under Capt. James Parker who wrote on his discharge
paper dated June 17, 1865m "Conduct most exemplary!" They had been
through
the greatest naval bombardment of the times together. On his return
from the
war he worked in the chenango Union Office in Norwich, upon H. H.
Beecher's
History of the 114th Regiment. The Telegraph Office at the same time
was
publishing Pellett's History of the 114th Regiment, and a friendly
rivalry
existed between the two Offices in getting out the Histories. Mr.
Roberts
died July 19, 1907, age 73.
In 1859 George Roberts was a member of the Masonic Lodge
Homeopathy
The Homeopathic practice of medicine was first introduced into Chenango
County in 1841 by George W. Roberts, a dentist of Troy, who, on account
of
ill health, had abandoned his profession and moved to a 14 acre farm
near the
village of Greene in 1836, where a sister was living. Having become
acquainted with the therapuetics of this new system while ini Troy, he
brought a set of books and homeopathic remedies with him, thinking to
take
care of his numerous famiy himself, as became necessary.
Neighbors began to appeal to him for help more and more often, so as
this
appeared to be a field inviting his efforts, he sold his farm and
removed to
the village to set up a practice. In partnership with him was Casper
Bruchhausen, a student of Homeaopathy recently from New York. In 1843
they
separated, the latter establishing himself at Oxford, and five year
later, in
Norwich.
There was much opposition from other members of the medical profession
in
Greene from the very first, so to protect his interest Dr. Roberts took
a
short leave of absence to attend lectures at a medical college in
Castleton,
Vermont, from which he obtained a diploma. Dr. Augustus Willard, upon
hearing the the diploma which had suddenly appeared upon the wall in Dr.
Roberts' office, immediately questioned its validity, and he started an
intensive investigation which caused much excitement in New York, Troy,
Albany, etc. It was written in the Boston newspapers and brought up at
the
American Medical Assoc Meeting in Philadelphia, and there are today in
the
Willard family possession, dated 1845, sixteen letters from Castleton
Medical
School which answer the charges of "shady" business involving
individuals,
for a price, and the School, thoroughly shocked, lost no time in trying
to
hush up the matter to "save face". What began as the G. S. Roberts
Affiar
became the Castleton Affair.
As for Dr. Roberts, he continued to practice in green until his death in
1870. Of his numerous family, three sons and one daughter became
doctors,
and another son, George C., was co-editor of the Chenango American for
48
years.
