Children of Jesse Rogers b. 1791, Part IV (Final Part)
Jesse and his first wife, Elizabeth Evans (1798-1832) had at least nine
children. I have told you about the four boys John Clark (Joe), Reuben
Brawley, William McKendree, and Robert Doak. One daughter died as a young
girl while the family was migrating and had to be buried "along side the
road" according to the Susan S. (Rogers) Martin letter. This was probably
when the family moved from Claiborne Co to Marion Co, TN in 1826.
Malinda (Morning) C. Rogers was born 1827 in Marion Co, TN just after the
family arrived there. She first married in William D. Cozby about 1846
Greene Co, MO after Jesse moved the family there in 1845. William was
Morning's step brother and son of Samuel Cozby d. Oct 1826 and Mary Griffith
who married Jesse Rogers 25 July 1835 in Marion Co, TN. William served in
the War with Mexico. He entered military service at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas
30 July 1846. Served in Co. F, 2nd Reg't Missouri Mounted Infantry under Col
Sterling Price (later Governor of Missouri and still later General in the
C.S.A. army). William was killed while serving near Ft. Domingo, Santa Fee,
New Mexico on 20 April 1847. Sterling Price was also the commander of the
Confederate forces at the battle at Wilson's Creek that took place near where
the Rogers were living many years later.
On 10 November 1850 Malinda C. married Marvin Tress Alderson in Greene Co.
The only child that I have recorded is James Wesley Alderson b. 10 March
1867, but there must be more. Marvin T. Alderson served in the Civil War as
a private in John Phelps Regiment MO Vols, he was present at the Battle of
Pea Ridge. His US Pension was denied (#605337). This file contains
statements by Rogers family members giving witness affidavits. Linda Thomas
Alderson who provided this information has also found some homestead papers
with Rogers affidavits. Melinda may have had a third husband, Floyd
Robertson, who was also married to Malinda's sister, Sarah, but that is not
yet well documented.
Manerva (Manervy) Jane Rogers b. 27 May 1828 in Marion Co, TN and d. 30 Jun
1911 in Webster Co, MO. She married David Griffith Cozby b. 7 Apr 1820 and
d. 29 Dec 1891. According to the 1860 census he was born in TN, but the 1870
census indicated that he was born in AL. Manerva and David were married 01
May 1844 probably in Marion Co, TN. David was the brother of William D.
Cozby above and the stepbrother of Manerva. David probably served in the
Civil War, but the widow's claim of Manerva appears to have been disapproved
(#557938). Manerva and David had 18 children. Both are buried at the Watts
Cem near Rogersville, Webster Co, MO near their parents (Jesse and Mary).
Sarah Wyrick (Sallie) Rogers was born ca 1830 in Marion Co, TN. She died 30
Jun 1911 in SW MO. She married John Wesley Robberson 24 July 1849 in Greene
Co, MO. They had three daughters. Her second husband was Floyd Robertson as
mentioned above.
The last child of Jesse and Elizabeth Evans was Susannah b. ca 1832 in Marion
Co, TN. She married Pleasant B. Eddings 15 February 1848 in Greene Co, MO.
Pleasant was born ca 1827 in Robertson Co, TN. He died in 1873 in Greene Co,
MO. They had 20 children in about 25 years.
Susannah was listed in 1870 Greene Co, MO census as 39 years of age. In the
1880 Greene Co census she was listed as 45 and living with her son Jesse
Riley Eddings. A notation indicates that she had a spinal injury (after
giving birth to at least 20 children, it is no wonder). It also indicates
that her father, Jesse, was born in NC. Jesse was born in 1791 in what is
now Tennessee, but that was before TN was a state. Although disputed, what
is now NE TN at that time belonged to NC.
It appears that Jesse and his second wife, Mary (Griffith) Cozby Rogers, had
one child, a daughter named Hester Ann. Note that William (Rev Dr William)
Rogers b. 1777 also had a daughter named Hester Ann who was born 1815 in
Claiborne Co, TN. Jackson Henry Rogers b. 1817 also named a daughter Hester
A. b. 1849 in Adair Co, KY. I suspect that all were named after an earlier
Hester Ann. Jesse's last child, Hester Ann, is buried near her parents in
the Watts Cemetery near Rogersville, Webster Co, MO.
It is difficult to determine her actual birth year. She is listed in the
1850 Greene Co, MO census as 13 years old. In the 1860 Census, she is listed
as 21 and in the 1870 Census as "Esther" 29. In all three censuses, she was
living at home with Jesse and Mary.
