Answer: No I don't know where or if he enlisted but I do know where the 3rd
Virginia was organized. It was organized in Feb 1776 at the towns of
Alexandria and Dumfries near what would later become Washington, DC. The men
of the Third Virginia were from the counties of Prince William, Fouquier,
Stafford, Louisa, Fairfax, King George, Loudoun and Culpepper. Not
Montgomery, Fincastle, or any other county in SW Virginia.
You also wrote: "He had already served in Dunmore's War in 1774 with his
father and some of his brothers." Historically, up to and including WWII,
families have went war together. Example: The five Rogers brothers at The
Battle of Guilford Court House. Where were John's brothers Benjamin, James,
David, and Joseph while he was freezing in Valley Forge? Also who were Hosea
and Michael Rogers of the Third Virginia Regiment? Should this lead us to
believe that Hosea and Michael are John (TPM)'s brothers? I don't think so.
You also listed a number of very common surnames from the 3rd VA that appear
in Wythe County. I don't believe the citing of a David Price or a John Mercer
or a John Hawkins in Wythe County leads us anywhere.
You also said there was some evidence that supported the belief that John
(TPM) served in 3rd VA, citing the DAR application of Mary Lea Rogers
Forsythe. Does anyone have a copy of her application so we can see what
evidence she used? I know that the DAR will not except old applications as
evidence for excepting new members into their organization.
Cousins, please don't let this be a dialogue between Jerry and me. Lets hear
your opinions.
