Ray,
You asked: Can you cite any evidence of this story before the monument was
placed at his grave site, 50 or 60 years ago?
No, I believe it was Stephen Henderson Rogers (1867-1960) who first obtained
this information from the National Archives. I have seen no reference to it
before that. However, have you found reference to the Battle at Guilford
Court House in Benjamin's or William's pension application.
I suspect that they did not know that the battle they participated in would
be famous and of great importance. They were too close to the action to
appreciate the total significance.
For the rest of the folks on the list:
This is a great exchange. Ray is asking some good questions that are
required if we are to "purify" our data. We not be able to answer the issues
for sure and there may still be open questions, but all should feel free to
question and provide information that may be part of the answer. There are
no pieces too small. If they fit together with other information, we may be
able to answer some of the questions.
The information provided a couple of days ago by Lea concerning John (TPM)'s
wife's first name is a good example.
