Subject: First Message on ROOTS-L Genealogy List
Date: Sat, 12 Dec 87 16:50:28 CST

This is a test message to the new ROOTS-L list at NDSUVM1.
So far only Alf Christophersen and Marty Hoag are members. I am
also setting it up to distribute items from soc.roots . We will
see if that works.

Alf: From NORUNIT you may enter:
TELL LISTSERV AT NDSUVM1 INFO
to get more information on LISTSERV. To contribute something you just
mail it to .

To subscribe to ROOTS-L the request is sent to :
TELL LISTSERV AT NDSUVM1 SUB ROOTS-L Firstname Lastname
Eg: tell listserv at ndsuvm1 sub roots-l Joe Doe

Alf can also enter commands to add people to the list. EG:
tell listserv at ndsuvm1 add roots-l firstname lastname
or delete them with tell listserv at ndsuvm1 delete roots-l

Alf: If something bad happens you can send the command HOLD to hold
the list (eg. if a loop gets going or whatever):

tell listserv at ndsuvm1 hold roots-l
tell listserv at ndsuvm1 free roots-l

If you want to see a list of users send REVIEW ROOTS-L command.

I hope this is useful. Marty

To all New Subscribers
Dear people!
Welcome to this meeting on Genealogy!

Recently I asked a question in the meeting INFO-NETS because
I was interested in computer techniques in genealogy and also
wanted to look for family in USA. Then I realized that there was
only one meeting which I possibly could reach from Norway, namely
'Soc.Roots' on UseNet News, which in turn showed up not to be
transmitted to Europe. Fortunately the person who told me about
that connection was also interested in making a new meeting which
could be reachable from other networks. So we started this
mailing-list, ROOTS-L at NDSUVM1.

I hope that you will find time and interest to use this
list, not only for info from others, but that you also will be
interested in sharing your interests and knowledge in this area.

Many of us has family, distant or near, on each side of the
Atlantic Sea. Until now we had either to travel or use the phone,
slow surface-mail or 'snail-mail' to communicate. These were
expensive, timeconsuming ways of communicating. I hope that in the
future each country would make databases for which we could use
computers to seek for information. Today, there is maybe great
anxiousness between many folks on this possiblity to find
information about their ancestors, but I believe security could
be solved if we want to do that.

I myself am going to be a member next year of a Swedish
organization on genealogy. One of their interests is to make a
database on church books and make these data readable for
genealogists. It would be interesting to discuss techniques on
how such data could be accessible from a net like BITNET and what
the security problems in such a system would be. Today these data
is accesible on a telephone modem somewhere. You will get the
knowledge of where after paying for the membership (70 SKR pr
year). They also distribute software for genealogy and church
book registrations.

If you have some themes you want to discuss, please tell me
().

In connection to what I have mentioned I also would like to
discuss what harm would knowledge about ancestors do for a
certain person and in what context could genealogical knowledge
be misused. What can we do to hinder such abuse?

So long for this time.

I am interested in getting addresses of bookstores selling books about
genealogy. Addresses in USA and Europe is of interest.

Do any know if LDI-genealogical indexes (databases?) are accessible by X.25
from Europe? I don't know about any in Norway, but seems to be available in
Sweden.

Anyway, I'm going to have holidays by now! I wish You and Yours a
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
