Welcome to Genealogy!! You are about to become a detective, antropologist,
statistician, librarian, (and occasionally, frustrated).
First, work from the known to the unknown. Check your mom or dad, the
descendant of your ggg-grandfather. Find out what they know. Next,
check with your grandparent(s), if living. If not living, try to either
find the Family Bible (or other religious books that may contain family
memorabilia,) get the death certificate and birth certificate of your
grandparents. Each certificate will give place and date of birth. Also,
try to get the obituary for your grandparents. Continue to follow this
paper trail backwards. Check with aunts/uncles. There's a chance that one
of them may be interested in genealogy and may have already done much of
your work for you.
Do you have his petition for citizenship? That will tell a lot, country of
origin, names of parents.
There is much work to be done....you may want to check census records also.
Some of the later ones (late 1800's) will show country of origin, number of
years in America, etc.
Good hunting!! You'll have a ball! I started less than two years ago and
have written two 285 page, illustrated, books. And I have two more to go!
Plus, I'm going "home" to Norway this summer to meet family I never knew I had.
(We traced our line back to 1528 in Telemark, Norway).
