Thanks to everyone who gave advice on how to begin! I will soon be doing
my research at a nearby LDS library in Oakland.

I'll be looking for Ridleys, Shillinglaws, Hamiltons, Smiths, Havens,
Haynes, Spanglers, & Kennedys in the Michigan/Illinois area (mid 1800's).
(just in case anyone knows of these lines...)

One thing I have learned already is to please label photographs! You may
know who everyone is in a particular photo, but your great-grandson might
not be able to figure it out. Some appearances change drastically with
age, as well. I recently looked at a 100-yr-old photo of my great-great-
grandmother, but no one could remember her name! Also, there were several
baby pictures of my grandmother and her brothers and sisters, but no one
could tell which was her! (Even the boy babies were wearing these dress-like
outfits.)

So do your descendants a favor!
