To Patrick and others who would like to find royal ancestors:
The closest we are to royalty on one side is that my grandfather was a
bodyguard to the King of Norway. On the other side, an Ives ancestor was
said to be a peace negotiator on Charlemagne's side, hence the goats
(sign of diplomacy) in the family crest.
But equally interesting are the first couple married in Antelope County,
Nebraska, the grandmother who walked back and forth to Michigan before she
was eight years old, and Marshal Swartout, when the Dutch settled the
Hudson Valley. Ordinary people also contribute to the bloodline, and
sometimes in an even more inspiring way, because they persevered in spite
of living outside the world of privilege and grandeur. Like most of us.
