I can only pass on the following information from several seminars on
geneological research given by various groups. I haven't tried to
prove any of the following statements, so I can't attest to their
accuracy. However, if true, they might simplify your research.

In general, the "Mormons" have copied all publicly accessable archives
in Europe and they are available through the LDS library system on
microfilm and are indexed. [I have no idea what the term "publicly
accessable" means - are Church records private, but publicly accessable?]
[I have seen transcriptions from the German Parish (Luthren) records of
my wife's, father's family, supposedly done from LDS sources.]

In general, genealogical research is of much more interest in America
than in Europe, hence when researching Europeans, check American sources
first... Anecdote... Professional researcher from Philadelphia was
researching someone in Germany, went through all the necessary beureacratic
nonsense to gain access to the archives, spent a couple of days searching
for particular individuals and records. When identified, the records and
references turned out to point to volumes published in the United States.

The Vatican Archives (in Rome) are reported to have copies of many
war destroyed church records.
