As far as I can tell, the RINs and MRINs are always in numerical order
and not reusable, but the ID number can be set by the user. Several of
the print and search commands allow you to use ID numbers instead of
RINs. I personally use the ID numbers for the same reason you mention:
I have several separate family groups that are not interrelated as of
yet (hopefully they will be if/when I get married next summer!).
