Pardon my ignorance. I'm new to this list too.
I don't really understand how things work here.
I assume the keeper(s) of this list do NOT want
every subscriber to send out requests for any
genealogocal information for any name under the
sun. But I've certainly seen many such requests.
Well, I'm in the same boat as most other folks.
I've done a little research on both the paternal
and maternal sides of my own family, and I'd be
very interested in finding more, especially
considering my mother's family is something of
a mystery. So, I'll also request any information
that anyone may have to offer. If this isn't good
form, my apologies. If there is a more appropriate
procedure that I should follow, could someone please
fill me in? Thanks very much.
My paternal half: TROUTMAN (Pennsylvania Deutsch,
inaccurately tagged Pennsylvania "Dutch") - German
farmers, small merchants, settled in Penn. and
mid-Atlantic region (ca. 1820s), migrated south to
Virginia and North Carolina. Traced as far back as
approx. 1560 to a Peter Troutman in southern Germany
(Black Forest/Bavaria), town called Grosse Greupan
or Grosse Gruepan. Other relations generally spread
over area covering southwestern Germany/northeastern
Switzerland (Winterthur/Zurich)/western Austria
(Feldkirch). Possible alt. spelling: Trautmann.
My maternal half: MEDEARIS (uncertain origin).
Usual link to Portuguese Medeiros, but no traces
of Portuguese ancestors anywhere in my family.
Definite links to other families throughout Great
Britain (England/Scotland/Wales) and Ireland.
Possible origin: MacDearis or MacDaris. No clear
information on European ancestors. Known settlers
in mid-Atlantic (Maryland/Virginia/North Carolina),
ca. 1850s.
My immediate family is based in Charlotte, NC.
Troutmans fairly common in western/central North Carolina
(there's even a town called Troutman). Other Troutmans
identified in Tennessee/Kentucky and Texas/New Mexico/
Arizona.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
