Hello Rick,
The name (van) Vossen is Dutch, of course, and means "foxes".
It is relatively rare, compared to the simple Vos (= fox).
E.g. in the Amsterdam telephonebook: Vos: 2 pages, against
Vossen: "only" 21 times.
The main reason, however, for me to react on your letter, is
to "warn" you (in a positive sense) for the possibility of rather
far going deviations from the standard spelling of this name.
For example, my wife is a Fokker. Her family stems from the
Fugger's, the famous German bankers at the time of the Hansa.
And the cote of arms of her family has *foxes*! So, probably,
Vossen, Fugger and Fokker are related names. Just beware!
Good luck, Jan Snoek, The Netherlands.
