Hi, Carol:

Although I am not known to be related to any of the Texas Rangers, they
hold much interest for me. As a result of the history of the Comanche
(who murdered my Mom), Apache, Kiowa, Karankawa, Texas Rangers, the USA
army and the Mexican Wars, I find I am related to Sam Houston and Gen
"Blackjack" Pershing. (Gens George Washington and Pershing were the
only to hold rank of 6-star general, General of the Armies.) I try to
maintain certain documentation to illustrate the "times".

I am attempting to compile a narrative which may be short enough, and
not offend the sensibilities of this Roots SIG. I trust it will be
interesting to many and may offer a videotape documentary to you. Wait
and watch for it.

As a genealogist, I am necessarily picking nits about vital stats.
However, I find interesting stories bring the old folks to life and give
them identity. I offer stories about Captains John "Jack" Coffey Hays
and Leander McNelly, Texas Rangers. Of all, these two are of most
interest regarding the formation of Texas and western USA. If not for
them, The Great Republic of Texas and the Republic of the Rio Grande
would now be owned again by Mexico. Further, if not for these early
Texas Rangers, Mexico would now own Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada,
California, Utah and Wyoming (and more, I believe). In the early days,
The Great Republic of Texas included portions of some of these (now)
states and extended as far north as Wyoming. Matamoros, Mexico City and
Republic of the Rio Grande (sometimes called the Nueces Strip) were
major theatres of operations for your Captain McNelly.

By your relation to Captain McNelly, you own a portion of a glorious
history. It is incumbant upon you to pursue and protect it.

Stay in touch.

Jerry
