Genral John J. Pershing was promoted to General of the Armies at the end
of WW I, in 1919. He held the rank until he retired in 1921 and the
rank was retired with him, until WW II.

Gen Pershing was the only person in the US Army to hold the rank of
General of the Armies of the U.S. He was given that rank in Sep 1919, he
was appointed Chief of Staff of the US ARMY in 1921 and retired on Sep
12, 1924.
