I've seen several posting regarding a definition of 'grass widow'.
There is an old saying - 'The grass is greener on the other side of the
fence.'
A husband who found what he felt was the 'greener grass' and jumped the
fence, left his wife with the role of a 'grass widow'. Divorce, as so many
things, was far more difficult for a woman to obtain than for a man in those
times.
Rather than a runaway husband, a woman at that time might prefer sharing with
a mistress. At least, the chance of continuing support was better, and that
is the most probable source of the term as might be used in a 'polite'
society.
