My great grandmother Martha Tucker Martin has an unmarked grave in the
Kewanee City Cemetery in Kewanee, IL. I have recently been checking
into what it would take to place a marker there. I found a monument
company in the area who gave me a decent price and a check with the city
indicated that because she was buried so long ago, no special permit for
placing the stone is required.
I would recommend contacting a monument company in the area where your
ancestor is buried for specific local regulations regarding placement of
stones on previously unmarked graves. If the ancestor is a veteran,
they may also be entitled to a free marker through the V.A.
I've received great information from monument companies on this topic as
well as on how to clean and repair markers. Most are very willing to
assist you.
