Subject: Battle of Vimy Ridge WW1, John F. McNeil
Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 08:38:49 -0500
My maternal great grandfather, who was Canadian, fought at the Battle of
Vimy Ridge in WW1. His name was John Francis McNeil. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how I can obtain his service records, etc? Any information
about this battle would be appreciated, as well. Also, a controversy
surrounded the McNeil family in the late 1930's. It seems John, wife, and
children were deported from California back to Canada. There were several
newspaper articles written about the family, as the nine children were
separated from their parents for quite some time. My grandmother was one
of the children. She was married to an American, my grandfather, and was
pregnant before the family was deported. She was able to stay in the U.S.,
but the newspapers I am told made quite a stir about the whole situation.
So if anyone has any further information about the McNeil family of
Halifax, Nova Scotia, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Genna Sanders
