Carol,
A friend provided me with a list of epidemics. I will seek permission
to post it to Roots-L. In the meantime....There are none listed for
1884, but in 1855 there was a nationwide yellow fever epidemic. In 1884
it was probably yellow fever also, unless it was the heat. In 1901, a
heat wave on the Great Plains killed over 9 thousand people.
