Louise,
I know how confusing all this internet business is to most of us. I was
there just like you.
To begin with you need to clear up the confurion between a URL and an
email address. The Uniform Resource Locater (URL) is a website address
and always begins with http:// Usually the address includes a www but
not always. When you click on or type in this kind of address, you will
be taken to the webpage. (There can be no spaces!)

The other address that you are using is an email address. this always
has an @ (at sign) in the address. It is always sent in the form of an
email message to an individual. You cannot access a webpage with this
kind of address.

I can understand your frustration! The kind of email address that you
mention in your note is even a bit dirfferent. You wrote about
. Notice that the address has a -L in it. This
means that you are writing to a mail/discussion List, and not to an
individual. The server rootsweb.com has hundreds of surname mailing
lists. But in order to access the mailing list, you have to subscribe
first. You must send an email to
(notice I added the word subscribe) In your email composition page the
subject line is usually blank, but AOL users must put something in the
subject line. Just say subscribe. In the body of your message write only
the word subscribe. Nothing else, not even your name. Soon after you
send the message, you will receive a notice that you are subscribed and
will start receiving messages from the NJBURLIN mailing list. More
details and nearly 4,000 mailing lists can be found at Rootsweb's
webpagehttp://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/
This Roots-L mailing list that we are on is also hosted by Rootsweb.
Hope this helps. If this is still not clear, email me at
mailto: Just click on this hot link.
