James M. GANN is my GGGfather. Fortunately the GANNS from VA>TN>AL>MS are a
very well researched family (numerous websites with tons of information).
James GANN (b. 1836 AL) married a young lady whose given and middle names
are, respectively, Eliza Jane (b. 13 Nov 1836 AL). I received a copy of
their marriage certificate from DeSoto County MS (m. 8 Dec, 1859) to
determine what her maiden name was. The name Eliza Jane WOOD is very
neatly, clearly written on the top part of the certificate. Down a ways on
the same certificate the name is written Eliza Jane (and what could be
interpreted as either WOOD, WARD or even WORD). I have assumed the name was
WOOD these past 20 years, because that name is so legibly written on the
certificate. However, websites I have visited almost invariably refer to
her as WARD or WORD, creating unrest for me as to her real surname. Anyone
with information about this family or who might suggest ways to confirm this
name, I would appreciate your kind response. This is a great site. Thank
