>>Is there anyone out there that know's anything about the dancing duo of
>>Vernon and Irene CASTLE? I have just found out that in the 1920's
>>Vernon and Irene either owned a stable or farm in Cortland County, NY.
>>At the time, my uncle Harry Truman GRUMMONS and his wife Jeanie (FOSTER)
>>GRUMMONS, parents of thirteen children found themselves in dire
>>straits. I have been told by several relatives, that Irene CASTLE had
>>taken a fancy to one of Harry's children, a girl, and adopted the
>>child. I was just wondering if there would be any chance in finding out
>>who she was and what become of her. Thank you.
I talk a little about the Castles in my new book on Irving Berlin (Schirmer
Books/Simon & Schuster/Macmillan)in the chapter on Berlin's first Broadway
musical, "Watch your Step," which starred the Castles. You might also look
at Lewis Erenberg's book, "Steppin' Out: New York Nightlife and the
Transformation of American Culture." There's also the Astaire/Rogers film,
"The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle."
Hope that helps.
