The DD-214 is a form issued by the military when a person separates from
active
duty in all branches of service. This form gives such things as full name,
date of birth,
place where person entered the service, all tours of active duty and where
they were,
medals awarded, and next of kin when entering service. When a person is
discharged
or released from active duty they usually go home and file this form with
their local
county courthouse in a special book called Military Discharge Book. This
prevents
them from never having a copy in case they lose theirs or it gets destroyed
otherwise
The great fire in the military storage facility in St. Louis in 1973 was
just such case.
I filed my DD-214 in the DeSoto County, FL Courthouse in 1959 when I
separated
from active duty so I can go get a copy whenever I wish.
