Not a dumb question at all! GEDCOM stands for Genealogical Data
Communications. These are files that contain your genealogy information.
You can exchange these files with other researchers or between other
genealogy programs.
By just sending the file, you don't have to retype all of your
information just to share it with someone (or enter it into another program).
