I understand that when the cavalry was fighting the Sioux they enlisted the
aid of Pawnee scouts. The Pawnees were delighted because not only did they
get to fight Sioux, they got paid, too. Life was GOOD! However, everytime
a scout did something brave he would change his name to reflect the deed.
And every time he did something stupid, the other scouts would change his
name for him. It drove the army paymaster crazy. It isn't to helpful for
those of us doing Native American research either.
