Rolla Cowger owned a hymnbook as early as 1940 and said the quote below was
written in German on the flyleaf. This quote has been the basis for many
researchers and website of the Gauger, Coger, Koger line to consider George
Cowger, John Conrad Gauger (Cowger), Jacob Cowger, Michael Cowger, and Mary
Cowger to be children of a Michael Cowger born in Germany. The spelling
varies but the idea remains the same.

"Michael GAUGER who is born in the year 1765 on the 10th of May. If your
heart as is right and adorned with true devotion, then this book will bring
you word and direction enough. Signed by Georg Michael Gauger done on the 28
day of March 1780."

Does anyone have any reliable source or documents that can show a connection?
My husband descended from George and Hannah Hawes Cowger. We have copies of
his vendue and appraisal of his property when he died about 1786. No other
Cowger is mentioned in either document although there are names of Hannah's
relatives from the Dyer family and other prominent names. There does not
appear to be a child named Michael through at least 3 generations.

Any help is appreciated and I'll be happy to share the results of the
research I've done.

Sandra
