It stands for Grand Army of the Republic. It was an organization of Union
veterans. The best information available is found on Roger Heiple's site"

There were two women's auxiliaries, one of which is still active and has a
museum in Springfield, IL. On the male side the organization is Sons of
Union Veterans of the Civil War, with a web site at:
