HUGH MC GARY, SR.,

PIONEER OF VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA, KENTUCKY AND INDIANA

(REVOLUTIONARY WAR OFFICER)

By Mary P. Hammersmith

Twenty-five years of research in probate, land, tax, military, slave
records, court minutes and case files, as well as manuscripts are used to
determine what kind of man Hugh McGary was, and what his life was like,

Maps, many of them from reconstructioning metes and bounds surveys of
McGary's and adjacent properties, show where McGary lived in Augusta
County, Virginia; in Rowan and Wilkes-Surry Counties, North Carolina; in
Mercer, Barren and Henderson Counties, Kentucky, and in Knox-Gibson
Counties, Indiana Territory.

Also included are: A new look of the Battle of Blue Licks and McGary's
role in that battle, throwing new light on that highly controversial
subject. The book lists soldiers captured in the battle and released the
following year from Ft. Ticonderoga, New York. Also listed are some men
who served under McGary.

The McGary Bible transcription is evaluated for authenticity and
reliability by comparing the dates listed with information in public
record, such as censuses.

McGary's arrival in Kentucky with Daniel Boone and their familes in 1775;
his association with Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachael, and her
divorce from Lewis Robards.

Tips on effective research techniques, and on interpretation of data to
glean the maximum information.

Linking families of Lovejoy, Badollet, Montgomery, Crockett, Steenbergen,
Ray, Coleman, Denton, Crow, Davis, Powell, Pritchett, Neathery, and others
with many McGary decendants.
