Subject: [ROOTS-L] LINCOLN <> SMITH <> LOVELACE -- Alexander Co. IL <> Pulaski Co., IL <> Jackson Co., IL <> 1865 to 1927
Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 08:17:50 -0600
I have a mystery:
Lewis LINCOLN was born 16 July 1814 in Lanesboro, Berkshire Co., MA and died
October 1905 in Carbondale, Jackson Co., Illinois.
His first wife was Ruth Phipps BANNISTER, whom he married 10 April 1840 in
Lanesborough, Berkshire County.
I don't know if Ruth died or if they were divorced, but circa 1865 Lewis
removed from Vermont to Southern Illinois.
Lewis LINCOLN married Mrs. Catherine Turner SMITH on 04 December 1866 in
Cairo, Alexander Co., IL.
Catherine Turner SMITH was born Abt. 1835 in Canada.
The only record I have of Lewis's marriage and life with Catherine, is a
copy of the wedding certificate and the following information from the 1870
census for Alexander Co. IL
1870 Census for Cairo, Alexander Co., IL
Census taken 16 June 1870
(info taken from photocopy of original page)
LINCOLN, Lewis; 55; m; w; traveling agent; real estate $4,000;
estate $1,000; born in MA
LINCOLN, Catherine; 35; f; w; born in Canada
SMITH, Arthur; 18; m; w; watchman; born in Canada
SMITH, James R.; 16; m; w; born in Canada
SMITH, Egbert A.; 12; m; w; born in Canada
SMITH, Carrie F.; 6; f; w; born in IL
LINCOLN; Lewis; 1; m; born in IL
LINCOLN; Bishop; 1; m; born in IL
DRAPER, ____; 65; f; born in Kentucky
Something happened to the marriage of Lewis & Catherine. Again no idea
whether she died or if they were divorced.
Lewis LINCOLN married, as his third wife, Anna R. LOVELACE. They were
married 29 October 1875 in a wedding which took place at the residence of
the Bride's mother in Metropolis, Massac County, IL. Anna was the daughter
of George(JOHN?) LOVELACE and MARY UNKNOWN. Anna was born 28 March 1842 in
Maumee City, Ohio, and died 10 June 1927 in Carbondale, IL (Jackson County).
Does anyone have any information on any of the above?
Here is hoping :-)
