I've tried the cheaper black ink (an off brand) but don't know if one would call it "generic". At any rate, it works just fine in my HP DeskJet 672C printer. I also have the refill cartridges for both the black and the
colored but have not had the courage to try them simply because some people have complained of the mess. However, others have said using them is a snap, so I will try them next. My husband found the colored ones
through the mail at $14.98 + tax/shipping = $16+. Sure beats $32.+! (Southern CA)
